Ortec Inc., a leading biomaterial and polymer technology company serving the life sciences industry, today announced it is to establish a European Headquarters, Manufacturing and Operations Centre in Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, creating up to 110 skilled engineering and science jobs in the region over the next several years once the plant is operational.

The project is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation through IDA Ireland. Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Easley, South Carolina, the privately owned company offers custom materials used in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and other health related FDA/EMA regulated industries. Ortec Inc. will commence its manufacturing operation in a 13,000ft2 leased building at Newcastle West Business Park. The company plans to double capacity at the facility to 26,000ft2 in the coming months subject to planning permission.

Founded in 1980, Ortec is a custom materials research and manufacturing company that helps clients reach their market goals through Technical Expertise, Quality Systems, Regulatory Compliance, Confidentiality, and Personalized Service. The company serves customers from multiple markets including: pharmaceuticals, medical devices, excipients, bioabsorbable products, hygienic products, cosmetics, and nutritional additives. Ortec currently operates from three world-class facilities located near Greenville, South Carolina.

“It’s great to see this project come to fruition. It is a terrific win for Newcastle West, for Limerick and the wider region, especially as it’s the company’s first investment outside the US. Ortec’s plans to quickly scale up its operations here demonstrates a firm commitment which will be of significant benefit in terms of jobs and benefit to the local community. I wish Christopher and his team every success here.”

– Martin Shanahan – CEO of IDA Ireland –

Ortec began searching for a European site six years ago, and quickly established a good working relationship with the IDA. The company was already supplying materials to the existing pharmaceutical and medical device community in Europe, and the business friendly environment gave Ireland an immediate advantage. A well-educated, native English speaking populace made the choice even easier. The company assessed several sites throughout the country before settling on County Limerick.

There were several things that influenced the decision; The Limerick City and County Council were very proactive in soliciting our interest to the area; The local developers; Access to Shannon Airport; Access to Limerick City; Access to Limerick Institute of Technology and University of Limerick both for graduates and for potential technical collaboration.

However, one of the main attractions of Newcastle West was its provincial location. Ortec’s founders and owners, the Brotherton family, come originally from a farming community. The family values the rural ethos and felt an instant connection with the people there.

  • “I am delighted that Ortec Inc., has decided to establish its European Headquarters and first investment outside of the US in Limerick. Creating the environment for jobs growth right across the country is a key priority for me. There are many advantages for companies like Ortec to choose our regions to set up their business and I welcome their decision to choose Newcastle West. These are exactly the kind of high quality graduate jobs that we seek to attract and it is a strong vote of confidence for Ireland and our regions that Ortec Inc. has decided to establish its European Headquarters here. I wish Ortec Inc. and their team every success in Ireland.”
    – Mary Mitchell O’Connor – Minister for Jobs, Enterprise & Employment –
  • “I welcome the announcement today by Ortec Inc., that it will establish its European Headquarters in Newcastle West in County Limerick, along with the manufacturing jobs that this will bring to the area. Over the last number of years I have been working closely with the IDA, Limerick City & County Council, the Shannon Group and the local promoters of the project, to secure this major investment for the town of Newcastle West and have met the company during their visit to Newcastle West. The promoters and the wider Newcastle West community are really thrilled to welcome Ortec to our home town. This is a fantastic endorsement of the promoters of this project and our community, and we all look forward to working successfully with the company for many years to come.”

The developers Peter Byrne, Derry McMahon, and Stephen O’Donovan have been tireless in promoting our project, the town, and the entire area. We are excited to be part of the community in Newcastle West.”
